Training Hill Loop - Quarry Trail This hike starts at the confluence, goes up the Training Hill (guaranteed to get your heart rate up!), follows the Pointed Rocks Trail east, crosses Hwy 49, goes around the Cool Cave quarry, descends to and returns on the Quarry Trail. Hike stats: 8 miles (round trip), elevation gain 1,500', starting elevation 600'. Ruck-A-Chucky Area of the American River We will hike along the American river about 3-1/2 miles each way (7 total miles) and a total elevation gain of about 1,000'. This is a very attractive area with nice views of the river. We'll eat lunch by the river. The Western States Trail crosses in this area. We will overlook a very difficult rafting point on the river. There is a Lower Fairy Falls about 30 feet high but you will need to scramble along the rocks to get a good view. Upper Fairy Falls is more impressive and just a short ways upstream. Hike down the steep bank to the base of the falls and have lunch on the rocks." Ranch ponds and the small lake is a draw for wildlife, particularly migratory waterfowl during the winter and early spring. Along with its beauty, learn about the rich history of the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm, the 1st Japanese Colony site established America in 1869. DEER CREEK HILLS PRESERVE - Event: Geology Hike Start Date: Saturday, February 25, 2012 Time: 9:00am-1:00pm Location: Deer Creek Hills Preserve Hikers will experience approximately 4 miles at a moderate pace will cover the gentle ascending low hills in the eastern area of the Deer Creek Hills Preserve. The geology hike is being led by SVC Docent Robert H. Sydnor, Engineering Geologist & Hydrogeologist. You'll be set back in time with the untouched beauty of 4400+ acres of blue oak woodlands. Escorted by SVC Equestrian Docents, you will explore on saddle back the cattle made trails on this working cattle ranch for approximately two and a half hours. This ride is through open country over a variety of terrain, including water crossings, most groups are from ten to twenty people in size, and travel at a walk. Our goal is a safe and enjoyable outing for all. Horses should be accustom to riding in groups and in open fields. AUBURN SRA - March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, 2012 - Auburn State Recreation Area Hike Series Trail mix each week. Auburn Confluence to Cool. Elevation: from 200' to 1,800 depending on how long you stay Distance: 9 Miles Rating: Beginner Duration: about 2.5-5 hours for the hike Event Fee: $0 Suggested host donation: $5 Directions to Trailhead: From Sacramento I-80 east to the Elm Street exit in Auburn Left onto Elm Street to the stop light Left (east) on High Street and follow the road to the right under the RR tracks Go straight through the light onto Hwy 49 towards Placerville Follow Hwy 49 down to the north fork and middle fork confluence of the American River Do not turn right over the bridge onto 49 to Cool/Placerville. Proceed straight about 1/8 mile to the curved bridge that crosses the north fork. Park on either side of the road before/after the bridge. Trailhead is on the right hand side of the road.
